Codes and Conventions

The genre of the Film is an action thriller.

In a typical action thriller you expect to see things like:
  • chase scenes in which a villian is chasing our main character ( possibly the hero )
  • explosions! you always at least one explosion in an action thriller ( for example: a car chase followed by a big crash and a car bursting into flames! )
  • there is always an element of mystery to an action thrille ( E.G. who is the evil genius or what is in the mysterious package? )
  • they also regularly have suspense ( our 'hero' held at gunpoint? )
  • heros and villans ( the standard plot is usally the film is based around out hero and they are trying to stop the villan)
  • a girl! there is always a very attractive lady who the hero trys to win over but she is usally at the centre of all the violence
  • often action thrillers inculde things called red herrings, these are misleading clues or maybe even traps!
  • it often boils down to a shootout.
You may not have noticed but differnt genres often also share similar types of sound, you always hear an:
  • explosion ( when we see the explosion we get sound effects of loud intense rattling expolsions!)
  •  a scream (there is always a bloodcurdling scream, usally from someone in a trap for instance )
  • the roar of expensive cars ( in the chase scene the cars get shown off with big loud engines! )
  •  gunshots ( in the shoot out there are gunshots, however we also get effects of like splintering wood as the bullet hits them )
  •  bones breaking ( in a fight scene for instance)
  •  rustling of leaves ( as people are being stealthy? )
  •  distant noises and murmers ( as the hero creeps up on the baddies you can hear the voices in the distance)
  • thrilling/intense music ( there is always music to suit the mood and atmosphere )

  1. Alex,

This is far too under-developed. There are plenty of codes and conventions for action films and I think that you have missed far too many.

It would be better for you to include a list of detailed bullet points, maybe about 10, in which you show that you clearly know about the many conventions of the genre
