Evaluation part 7

When I look back at the preliminary task I can see vast improvements everywhere, we have used better shot types and made them more effective in our final piece and also added music and costume. we also learnt about how to frame shots better. this has improved the overall film as the characters are much more convincing in the final film. The music was an execelent touch as it reallt helped build the scene, it made the audience know something was coming, the tention was building until the alien appers on the screen and simultainusly  the music crashes very loudly.

In our preliminary we had to have 3 people to film it, in the full film we made it successfully with only 2 people mostly. Originally for the full film we had a team of four, but this did not work properly as we were unorganised and couldn’t manage the time because every weekend someone couldn’t make it. So me and kyran came together and discussed it and decide to go back to my house, change the film slightly and film it all in 2 free periods on a Tuesday morning.

This was a much better idea as we could do it exactly how we needed it to be as for the other actors they did not fully understand the film and so it was harder to get exectly what we wanted. it  was also better because we only needed two people and that made us much more available for filming times.

Evaluation part 6

What have I learnt?:

This project has taught me a lot about the process of filmmaking.

I have learnt mainly about the different shot types, and how to use them correctly. things like 'match on actions' i had never heard of before and now i know all about them and can successfully use them in the film. if you look at the match on actions from the perliminary task they were not as smooth as in the final film.

I have also learnt how to frame shots correctly and effectively. At the start of the project we had no clue of how bigger differance accuratly framing a shot can make! if you look  at the very bottom of this post you can see a very good example of this, in the perliminary task we had a convorsation seen which we framed very poorly, in the final peice we had a similar shot but we made it more successful when we were introducted to the rule of thirds.

finally I have learnt about continuity and the errors you can have if you are not careful. in our perliminary task we have a continuity error but it is justified by the way the shot is framed, you could say that in the second shot it is just out of sight, see the small balck bag on the table:

here you can see the camera bag,                                 here it has disappered

a well framed shot
a poorly framed shot

Evaluation part 5

audience attraction:

The film is based around action, guns and aliens, this is the key thing that attractes the target audience, this is the sort of thing that young males love!

My audience reaserch showed me what most men wanted in there ideal film, the majority said 'action' things like explosions and chases! Our films target audience is mainly males and some females from the ages of about 15- 35, from the audience reaserch we had very keen feedback from males in this age range saying that this kind of film sounds 'perfect' or 'a great one to watch with mates'. these replys were from people in the perfect target audience we only had 2 replys (out of 10) who did not like the sound of this film, and they were not in the ideal audience range.

from the feedback i can see that we have attracted our ideal audience and that they would be very keen to watch it.

Evaluation part 4

Target audience:

The film appeals an audience of a group of  any body from young adults to people up to 30s-40s. This age range is the most common for our film, The way Sam is dressed makes him appeal to people who are in the same situation, wearing hoodys/ tracksuits, and getting stick for just being young. However the way Sam acts makes people warm to him and attract a wider audience and even maybe helps attract an older audience and show that teenagers arnt all bad. For example, maybe an older person who thinks all teenagers in hoodys are horrible will end up on Sam's side.

Classified defiantly appeals more to boys than girls. in my feedback from my questionarre i got more feedback from male viewers giving more positive feedback, there was less female response. http://app.fluidsurveys.com/surveys/alexstevens2/audience-targeting/

Evaluation part 3

media institutions:

The type  media institution that would produce our film would be a big company that produces all the new feature films.  I belive our idea has the potential to be a big feature film. If you look at some of film produced in a similar genre they are usally produced by someone like '20th century fox' or 'universal'. our film has kept to the regulations of a media text of this age catagory. there is little offensive content in the film, mild language and aliens are the only threats.

The bbfc regulations for violence are:

'Violence: violence may be strong but should not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury. The strongest gory images are unlikely to be acceptable. Strong sadistic or sexualised violence is also unlikely to be acceptable. There may be detailed verbal references to sexual violence but any portrayal of sexual violence must be discreet and have a strong contextual justification.'

We meet the criteria here as we only have little, mild violence. We do not dwell on the violence as just after the 'kick scene' happens it fades to black.

The bbfc regulations for offensive language are:

'language: There may be frequent use of strong language (for example, ‘fuck’). The strongest terms (for example, ‘cunt’) may be acceptable if justified by the context. Aggressive or repeated use of the strongest language is unlikely to be acceptable.'

we also meet the criteria because we use mild language and not regularly. In the opening two minutes there are no swearwords, however the full film would contain them, they would stay within these guidelines.

Evaluation part 2

Social groups.

Our film appeals to a very wide range of people ranging from people with an age range of about 15+.  This is because the target audience can relate to Sam, they know what its like to be a teenager and be investigative and maybe even a bit troublesom. It also appeals to an older age range of 30 or so. It is a fun, fast paced gripping action thriller. the chase scense and men with guns are considered 'cool' in an action thriller. The film maily appeals to men, the genre of film is typically more apealing to men.
This is the way Sam is dressed.

The viewer socio-economic status ranges from a D grade   (working class) to a C1 grade (lower middle class).  Our main character is a teenager wearing hoody and tracksuit, however he is not like the stereotype, we tried to break the stereotype with our film. Usually people dressed in such a way would typically be troublemakers and possibly violent, but this is not the case for Sam.

Sam is very investigative, in one scene in which he is on the computer looking up information on what he has unearthed, in this scene the shots we have used is a shot reverse shot, however each time it switches it gets closer to the subject whilst music is building in the background, the final shot in this scene of Sam is up close to his eyes. The viewer can see right into his eyes. I believe this shows how investigative he is.

The way Sam is dressed makes him appeal to people who are in the same situation, wearing hoodys/ tracksuits, and getting stick for just being young. However the way Sam  acts makes people warm to him and attract a wider audience.

Evaluation part 1

Conventions.

In our film we have stuck to typical action thriller codes and convention in our film we include a: chase scene, areas of mystery, suspense and heroes and villains all of which are typical in action thrillers.

We do have a sci-fi twist in ours!

I think we have kept to these codes and conventions well but we have added a few extra codes and conventions that are not typical of an action thriller. We have added a twist to the action thriller as all the way through the film up to when he opens the package it could be anything, a body perhaps or a rare stolen diamond maybe, but when he realises he held some top secret alien documents or secrets throws a very scary, sci-fi twist on the film!

Classified is still a successful action thriller beacuse it sticks to the codes and conventions typical of an action thriller. Even though it has a sci-fi edge, the film grips you in the way an action thriller does. You are routing for Sam, and against the army soldiers, at the point when Sam trips and falls the audience feels a scense of worry for him.

The sci-fi element of the film throws a very intresting and fun twist on  the film. It takes it away from the action thriller genre and builds the film more character and makes it more appealing to a wider audience.
